Top 5 Best Winter Blankets Reviewed

Heating bills rise immensely during the winter months, and the only way to combat a high energy bill is a solid winter blanket.

Not all blankets will warm you the same, however. You need to find the warmest, most durable blanket on the market to get you through the coldest months of the year.

For your buying convenience, we’ve compiled a list of the top five warm winters blankets on the market.

How We Chose Our Rankings

We always aim to have the most accurate reviews on the internet. Nothing changed with our reviews of the top five blankets.

We considered several elements before developing our rankings. Here is a brief overview of some of the characteristics we looked at the closest.

Quality Construction Winter Blankets

User Feedback

User feedback is one of the essential characteristics we look for in all of our reviews. The company can boast the best specifications on the market, but if they can’t deliver their products aren’t worth purchasing.

The public can give us a better idea of what the average user experience is like with these blankets. We might receive an impeccable blanket, for instance, while the majority of users purchase a blanket that is sub-par. There is a fair amount of variation in any product, which is one of the reasons user feedback is so critical.

Additionally, those who purchase the products for personal use often use them for years. We can’t observe how a blanket will endure a couple of years of wear and tear, while users can. If a blanket breaks down after a year, we might not know about it. If the reviews tell us this is the case, however, we will steer away from it in our rankings.

Quality Construction

The construction of the blanket is the number one tangible element we observed when making our reviews. A lot of winter blankets use synthetic materials. While this material keeps you warm in some spaces, they don’t provide the same level of quality as natural materials do.

We prioritized blankets that used natural materials like cotton, wool, and silk. Not only do these materials breathe better, but they’re often easier to clean. They also wick moisture more effectively, so you won’t overheat when your body temperature changes over the course of the night.

Durability Winter Blankets

Durability

You’ll want a blanket that will last you years. Some blankets might be sufficiently warm when you first get them, but after a couple of years, they’ll start to rip and develop holes.

Some of this will undoubtedly have to do with user error, but if a lot of users have the same experience, it’s a problem with the company. Washing blankets can sometimes cause damage when it shouldn’t.

With electric blankets, durability is even more essential. Electric blankets can short-out after a while, and sometimes don’t stand up to multiple washes. We considered all of these elements before including the products in our rankings.

If there were any durability problems with these blankets, we ranked them lower on our list. A good blanket should last you a decade or more. There’s no reason one should break down in a couple of years.

  • EXTRAVAGANT - Luxurious and elegantly designed Sherpa Fleece Reversible blanket is available in queen size measuring 90 by 90 inches and navy color to give a glamorous look to it
  • DURABILITY - extra warm blanket with 2-sided heap and 2-inch hem having double needle stitching to make it highly durable and perfect for snuggling
  • SUPER WARM - Stay warm and cozy all year long with this extra warm sherpa fleece reversible blanket which is best for winter camping, backpacking or for use in an air condition room

The Utopia Bedding Sherpa Fleece blanket is one of the best blankets we were able to test. It’s warm and cozy, durable, and machine washable, so you don’t have to take a trip to the dry cleaner.

The blanket is available in any size you need. It’s fantastic for keeping you warm as you sleep or snuggled-up on the couch watching television.

While the blanket is rather light and thin, the flannel material protects you from the cold outside. This blanket has the added benefit of working well in the fall or spring too. It won’t overheat you on cool nights and will reflect your body heat enough for the winter months.

The only drawback we saw with this blanket is how much it sheds. You’ll probably have to pick some blue fuzzy dots off of your pants after the first few uses.

  1. Merous Winter Fleece Blanket

The Merous Winter Fleece blanket is another fleece winter blanket that will keep you warm on cold nights. You can choose from nine different colors and shades to get one that perfectly fits your bed or couch.

The blanket also uses hypoallergenic polyester to reduce allergic reactions you may suffer. If you or a family member is sensitive to allergens, this might be a blanket you’d want to consider. It’s wrinkle-free and machine washable, so caring for this blanket is easy as well.

The downside of this blanket is the pilling. You’ll find some small balls of fuzz on the blanket, especially after washing. It’s also only available in one size, so it’s better for couch cuddling than it is for sleeping.

Bedsure offers a flannel fleece blanket that is available in a variety of sizes and colors. It’s relatively light, but still warm enough to protect you from the elements when you’re curled up at home.

The microfiber polyester structure means the blanket can take a fair amount of wear and tear. It also avoids shedding, so you won’t be pulling many blue or red fuzzies off your sweatpants when you take the blanket off.

Like the above two options, the downside of this blanket is the pilling. It’s hard to find a fleece blanket that doesn’t attract fuzz balls, so we recommend keeping them clean for as long as you can. You’ll have to wash it eventually, but it will probably be a bit fuzzy for a while afterward.

If you want a blanket that will tackle the coldest nights in the winter, you probably want a heated blanket. The Sunbeam Microplush heated blanket is one of the electric blankets we tested, and it stands up to the cold.

It has ten different heating settings and an auto-shutoff for safety. This is a blanket that is great for warming a cold bed before you fall asleep for the night.

Some users reported durability concerns with this blanket, but they were far from universal. Still, it didn’t make the top half of this list because some users said that it lost heat after a year or two of use.

This blanket is another from Utopia Bedding that made the list of the best winter blankets. It isn’t as warm as the blanket we covered above, which is why it’s down here in the rankings. If you want a blanket that you can use in the winter and on cool summer nights, though, the Sateen Polar Fleece is worth considering.

Buyer’s Guide

Now that we’ve given you our rating for the top five winter blankets, it’s time to provide you with a bit more information about buying one of your own.

There are some considerations that you should take before buying, and we’ve included them below. If you’re looking for help deciding which blanket will be the best for you, follow the advice below.

Size

Consider your size needs before you decide which blanket to buy. Most blankets come in multiple sizes, so you can almost always find the blanket you want that will fit your bed.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that blankets are one-size-fits-all. They aren’t, and if you purchase the wrong size, you’ll be stuck with a blanket that’s too big or too small.

If you’re buying a blanket for your bed, sizing the blanket is as easy as choosing twin, double, queen, or king size. You might have to check the measurements to make sure, but this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

The complexity in size comes when you’re picking a blanket for relaxation or couch warmth. You may want a blanket for solo use or one that you can share with your partner. Take a look at the blankets you currently use and judge your new one accordingly.

Moisture Wicking

Moisture Wicking

Since we’re primarily looking at blankets that will keep you warm on the coldest nights, moisture wicking isn’t the most important element we considered. We didn’t factor it into our rankings too heavily, but it’s still a feature a lot of people want in a blanket.

If the blanket uses natural materials like cotton or silk, it will wick away moisture while staying soft and comfortable. Most people prefer these options over blankets that use synthetic materials. These materials trap moisture and can make it too hot and uncomfortable underneath the blanket.

If you need a blanket that will keep you warm in the cold, it doesn’t matter very much if the blanket prioritizes moisture wicking. Still, it’s a positive if your blanket wicks moisture, as it will give it more longevity and versatility. You can use them on cool nights to stay warm without overheating, and they still perform well in the coldest of evenings.

Electric Blankets Make Fantastic Winter Blankets

Some people stay away from electric blankets because of their perceived danger. You can find some older stories of electric blankets catching fire when people left them on too long, and this is a strong deterrent for some.

Older individuals tend to be especially wary of electric blankets. They weren’t always as safe as they are today, so being a bit skeptical of them is understandable.

Despite how electric blankets used to be, they’re quite safe now. Almost all heated blankets have an auto-shut-off feature that will make your blanket turn off after a designated amount of time. You won’t fall asleep and wake up in a sweat from the heat, because it turns off after being idle.

Washing electric blankets can be a chore if you don’t do it correctly, but a lot of these are machine washable nowadays. You should still check the user manual for instructions, but electric blankets aren’t as high-maintenance as they once were.

Throws Are Not Blankets

If you’re shopping for a comfortable blanket, you’ll likely come across some throws advertised on the same page. These are not blankets, and won’t provide the same warmth a winter blanket will.

Blankets are meant to keep you warm and comfortable when you get cold at night. Throws are for decoration. Sure, they might provide an extra layer on a cold night when you don’t have anything else, but that’s not their primary function.

People use throws to add an aesthetic appeal to their bed or couch. That doesn’t mean a great blanket won’t look nice, however. Before you buy, double-check to make sure you’re not buying a throw.

Washability Winter Blankets

Washability

One of the elements you should consider before deciding on the perfect winter blanket is how often you’ll wash the product. A lot of blankets are machine washable, but some of them aren’t. If you want to skip trips to the dry cleaner, you should prioritize a blanket that you can wash at home.

Washing is particularly important if you’re considering an electric blanket. Trying to understand how to clean these without a tutorial is mind-boggling. You might think the best option is to bring them to the dry cleaning, but it isn’t. Dry cleaning electric blankets can do more damage to them than washing it at home will.

To wash a heated blanket, you need to limit the amount of time it’s in the washer and the dryer. Always wash and dry the blanket on low settings, and skip the rinse cycle in the wash. It’s best to consult the user manual before washing your chosen blanket, just to make sure you don’t ruin it. An electric blanket is not much of use if you wreck the electrical component.
